Supply List for Landscape Painting Workshop

Supply List for Landscape Painting Workshop

Supply List for:  Landscape Painting Workshop

First and foremost: bring a photo of a Landscape scene you want to paint!

Note about Supplies: I don’t expect you to go out and buy something unless I note “Required’. Otherwise use what you have already invested in for the class. Your goal should be to minimize the amount of equipment you own but increase the quality of your most important equipment. Be an artist not a collector!

RECOMMENDED SUPPLY LIST:

Pencil HB or 3B or a Mechanical Pencil with HB or 3B lead

Pencil sharpener or pocketknife if needed.

Eraser: Needed eraser is best.

Paper/Sketch Book or Pad or better yet printer paper on a flat plastic clip board. I use 8-1/2 “x 11” paper cut in half on a half size clip board. You can use either 8.5x11 or half size or a sketch book.

Water Container: Plastic bottle, plastic food storage container, collapsible container, a number of things work. I like the Faber-castell foldable water cup best. One is good, two is better.

Spray Bottle fine mist, I got mine at CVS. Or get an Atelier fine mist sprayer at art supply stores.

Paper Towel: Viva for smooth texture. Very absorbent and can be used for lifting and making clouds.

Towel – cheap, I use white painter towels sold at Big Box Hardware Stores in the paint section.

Masking Tape, I buy in bulk at the Big Box Hardware Stores in the paint section.

Painting Board or easel board, need something to tape paper down on to paint. Gator Board, Plexi-glass or sealed ¼” plywood or easel system. I prop my boards up with 2 or 4 rolls of masking tape or use easel.

Watercolor Paper: A professional grade, 140 lb. rough texture, paper size should be 9” x 12” minimum.  A block of 140 lb. paper is a good option. Arches, Hahnemule, Saunders Waterford or Strathmore all good options.

Paint Palette use what you have but it should have good size mixing area. I use Mijello Fusion Airtight Palette. When open it measures approximately 12” x 12’, this is good for studio and Plein-air painting. You only need 24 paint wells max!!! The extra mixing area is better to have. Mijello also makes a smaller 18 color palette which is a good option.

Watercolor Paint use what you have as long as it is professional grade and tube paint. Lukas Aquarell 1862 (Germany), Da Vinci (USA), Daniel Smith (USA), American Journey (USA) or Holbein HWC (Japan).

Colors: Required: Sepia and Indigo (Am. Journey or HWC). Recommended: Cad Yellow Medium (Da Vinci), New Gamboge (Am J) Yellow Ochre Light (Lukas), Gold Ochre (Lukas), Cad Red Medium (Am J), Alizarin Crimson (Am J or Lukas), Cerulean Blue (Lukas), Cobalt Blue (Am J or Lukas), Burt Sienna (Da Vinci or Lukas) , Burnt Umber (Lukas), and Olive Green (Am J or Lukas or Da Vinci). Optional colors:  Dioxazine Violet (Lukas), French Ultramarine (Da Vinci), Coastal Fog (Am. Journey) Opera Pink (Daniel Smith).

Brushes: a round #14 brush (Escoda Perla). If you have a #12 or #16 that is fine, and you don’t need all three. Recommend you have a #8 and a #4 round. Flats optional, 1”, ½” and ¼”. I highly recommend you get a ¼” Dagger brush. Other optional brushes, one Liner or Rigger #2 and a Sword Brush. One inexpensive flat top bristle toothbrush for splatter. If you have a large mop brush include it.

If you need to buy, I highly recommend buying Escoda Perla brushes for your rounds and your dagger. Dick Blick or Amazon usually has them at reasonable prices. Rosemary Snowdrop is a good alternative brush line.

RECOMMENDED:

Lunch/Snacks – You know what you like and need, I suggest bottled water and tea or soft drink, crackers, nuts or fruit, bag lunch or depending on location there may be places nearby to quickly pick something up. I usually carry beef jerky. Always have water.

For reference only: I purchase most of my supplies from Jerry’s Artarama.com or DickBlick.com. If I am on the road, I try to purchase from the local art store. If you know exactly what you want, then Amazon.com can be a good choice for low prices, their art supplies usually come from other art stores.
